She said participation in OSOW symbolizes an appreciation of cultural diversity and respect for environmentalism. Parker-Ambrose started the OSOW celebration with the mission to teach people about the unique craft, culture, history and technology of kites and kite making. “The first airplane was a box kite, which led to NASA, and the first radio was a kite launched across the Atlantic.” “The more I started to learn about kites, I every technological movement has been created by the kite, every one of them,” Parker-Ambrose said. In 1975, she opened Denver’s first kite store, Sky Scrapers in the Highlands, and that same year she invented the first three-dimensional sculptural wind sock, which she originally designed as a chili pepper and various farm animals.

We were at Cranmer’s Park for 12 years, and we outgrew it.” “We’ve moved the event three different times. “It started out in the beginning as a kite club, but then people kept saying they wanted an event, so we added different components to turn it into a festival,” Parker-Ambrose said. During her trip, Parker-Ambrose presented a kite titled, “The Peace Comet” to the congregation and was hailed as an interpersonal innovator for the gesture. The first official OSOW festival took place on the second Sunday of October in 1985 as a marking celebration of its founder, Jane Parker-Ambrose’s legendary visit to the Soviet Women’s Peace Conference in 1975. “I didn’t think those kinds of stunts were possible it’s really interesting and exciting.” “It’s really amazing the kind of things they’re able to do with kites,” said spectator Lynn James. The team performed several synchronized acts though the spitting rain and demonstrated the versatility of their kites by slicing though the chilly air in perfectly aligned swirls and dramatic dives that averted the ground in the nick of time, every time. These “Revs” are capable of flying all directions, changing speeds and even stopping frozen in mid-air. New to the OSOW festival this year was the iQuad Kite Team, a performance act from Vancouver that uses technologically groundbreaking kites appropriately called Revolutions.
“Everyone who was here really got a lot out of it all the kids had a great time at the parade.” “We got rained out a little bit, but I think it was still a lot of fun,” said Christina Welch, leading member of the nonprofit peace education group, Jovial Concepts, and volunteer coordinator of OSOW’s pet parade.
